Mid-Week Tid Bits, 12-26-13

December 26, 2013 Leave a comment

The quote for the week:  Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.
Henry Ford

I hope that you all had a good Christmas and were with family or friends.  This Saturday will be the last performance of 2013 here at The Woodbine Opry, and I hope that you will be with us.

This week’s trivia question:   This artist  was an unlikely candidate for country music stardom. Yet as a songwriter, bandleader, recording artist, and television entertainer, he broke new ground in country music, and he helped to bring waltzes, polkas, and cowboy songs into mainstream country music during ten productive years at the Grand Ole Opry.  He wrote or co-wrote more than 400 songs and helped introduce horns, electric guitars, and drums in to country music.  Who is he?

Last week’s answer:  Louise Rowe, the only female member of The Texas Playboys

I hope to see you this Saturday night at The Woodbine Opry.

It was a rainy night in Georgia, but we had a good time here at The Woodbine Opry.  For the first time in a long time, we had no first-time visitors.  Considering the time of year that it is, this is understandable.  The half-n-half was $178.00 and the cake table was loaded with goodies.  Thanks to all who donated to this cause and for those who purchased tickets.

The quote for the week:  I have a very strict gun control policy: if there’s a gun around, I want to be in control of it.
Clint Eastwood

I always look forward to Saturday nights here at The Woodbine Opry, and I’m sure that many of you do the same.  It is a great place to meet up with friends and have a good time enjoying the music and dancing.  Come on out with us this Saturday and see for yourself the fun that everyone has.

This week’s trivia question:  In contrast to most artists during the heyday of the Nashville Sound, this artist always recorded with his road band, thus keeping a distinct sound and a live feel.  Along with this, his desire to keep a winning song and arrangement formula led to his successful signature style.  Who is he?

Last week’s answer:  Connie Smith

I hope to see you this Saturday night at The Woodbine Opry.

Happy Thanksgiving

The quote for the week:  The thankful receiver bears a plentiful harvest.  William Blake

Here at The Woodbine Opry, we have much to be thankful for, both individually and collectively.  I am personally thankful for having the privilege to play with so many fine and dedicated musicians that we have here, and also for the opportunity to meet so many fine people that come to the Opry.

This week’s trivia question:  This country music hall of famer wrote more than 1,000 songs and recordings featuring his tunes sold more than 50 million copies.  One of his biggest hit songs was one of the first “cheating” songs in the country music industry.  Artists that recorded his songs include Bing Crosby, Vic Damone, Ernest Tubb, Red Foley, Ray Charles, Mickey Gilley, Andy Williams,  The Supremes , and numerous others.  Who is he?

Last week’s answer:  Johnny Bond

I hope that you have a great Thanksgiving Day and that you will join us Saturday night here at The Woodbine Opry.

We had a packed house tonight here at The Woodbine Opry.  Our first-time visitors came from Woodbine, Nahunta, and Brunswick, Ga., Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach, Hilliard, and Sebastian, Fl., Napa, Ca., and Raleigh, Nc.  I do hope that you all enjoyed your evening with us here at The Opry and can come back again.

We had a nice variety of goodies to give away and thanks to all who donated to this cause.  The half-n-half was $296.00.  A big thank you to all who purchased these tickets.

Those providing tonight’s entertainment were Robert McCullers, T.K. Hilton, J.C. Hunnicutt, Aubrey Jones, Brian Rowland, Joe Muench, and yours truly.  Our guests tonight were Nelly Aba, and for a first-time appearance, Justen Harden.  Justen has a great voice and it’s good to see a young man take an interest in the Opry.  The band enjoyed having him with us and I believe everyone would like to see him back again.

On a personal note, thanks to all who signed my birthday cards; I felt honored. The link to tonight’s photos/videos:   http://s1143.photobucket.com/user/TheWoodbineOpry/library/November%202013?sort=3&page=1
